on May 8th, 2007Newspapers and Graduations

Saturday my cousin graduated from High School so I got ready early. I grabbed my camera and picked up my mother to take her to the graduation. While I was there her husband Bob tossed me the newspaper. He showed me an article that mentioned his show at the Cat’s Record on Brainerd Road. With the article was a portrait of Bob, a portrait that I took. He showed me the current Enigma and it had the portrait in it also. The Chattanooga Times Free Press had one of my photos in it. The photographer was credited as “contributed photograph” however, I knew it was my portrait, my work. I had given Bob permission a week or two ago to use that portrait for press. I couldn’t imagine that it would be in a newspaper or a magazine like the enigma.

Later at the graduation I tried to take some pictures. Memorial Auditorium is a little dark for photography. Even though we has really good seats I had to use a 300mm lens. I set the camera to ISO 1600 and told the camera to underexpose by a full stop, my shutter speeds at the maximum aperture of the lens still ranged in the under 1/100th of a second range. The high ISO setting on my camera produces a great deal of sensor noise, but I still captured a couple of nice photos.

The times free press comes from when Chattanooga two daily newspapers (we were one of the last cities to have two daily newspapers) merged. The Chattanooga Times and the Chattanooga Free Press became the Chattanooga Times Free Press.

That is very cool that your photos were in the Times Free Press (what a name, btw) and enigma too. I’m confident that someday you’ll have your pictures published *with* your name on them! :)
