on Nov 12th, 2007Portrait Week: Day One

I thought it would be nice to look at my top ten favorite portraits that I have in my collection. Some of these you have seen and others you might not have. Some of these you have seen in a slightly different version. That is one of the joys of working in RAW, I can make an unlimited number of different versions of an image. What you will find out is that very seldom is an image finished the second I press the shutter release. All of these are portraits of people I know and generally think highly off. I am going to go in reverse order of how well I know the person or how I feel about them. So today are the friends, later in the week will be family and then loved ones. So here are todays two images:

Rich Amanda

Ok, these two photos were taken six months apart, but they show members of the photo group. These are not my only friends but I have more photos of them because we usually have cameras around when we meet up.

The first photo has very little editing applied to it. I Adjusted the contrast and the saturation. The lighting was mixed from a little bit of street light, a little natural light and some business light. This is Rich and he takes amazing portraits himself, much better than mine. You want a fun and edging but beautiful portrait then call him. He is also loves to ham it up for the camera but don’t tell him I said so. Behind him is one of the streets downtown. Simple back grounds are a theme that I like in most of my portraits as you will see.

The next one doesn’t have any background at all. It however is very heavily edited. Using the GNU Image Manipulation Program I removed most of the detail leaving a line drawing style portrait. Also it has some purple and I like purple. Amanda here is an very talented photographer and her animal shots are the best.

These are the two extremes of my portrait work from very natural to very stylized. I think there is a huge amount of latitude in what makes a good portrait. On my part I like something that I can connect with the person, a smile or a smirk.

I didn’t move the blog. I plan on keep both. The other is for stuff that does not need to be on this blog.

Thanks for the comment on the photos. The commenting on the photoblog is a known issue and I am trying to resolve it.
